Cookie policy

The cookies this website sets and how to control them.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website stores in your browser. Some are essential for a site to work; others are optional and are only set if you agree.

Cookies we always set

NamePurposeTypeHow long
wtb_sessionKeeps forms secure: it holds a one-time security token that stops other websites submitting our contact form, voting or changing your cookie choices in your name.Strictly necessaryUntil you close your browser
cookie_consent_prefsRemembers the choices you made in our Cookie Preferences Manager (whether Performance Analytics and Targeted Marketing are on, and when you chose) so we don’t ask again on every page. It can’t be read by scripts.Strictly necessary6 months

Strictly necessary cookies don’t need your consent under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), because the site can’t work properly without them.

Optional cookies

Our Cookie Preferences Manager — the same one used across our family of websites — has two optional categories. Both are off until you turn them on: tick the ones you’re happy with and choose Save Choices, choose Accept All Cookies to turn both on, or Reject All to keep both off.

  • Performance Analytics — counting visits and seeing which pages are read, so we can improve the guides.
  • Targeted Marketing — adverts, and measuring them.

We don’t currently use any analytics, advertising or tracking cookies. Whatever you choose, nothing optional is set. If we add any, they will stay switched off unless you turn them on, and we’ll update this policy first.

You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. If you switch a category off, we remove its cookies from our domain straight away and stop loading the service.

Other services

  • Google reCAPTCHA (spam protection). If it is switched on for our contact form, Google may set or read its own cookies on that page for security. See the Google Privacy Policy.
  • Websites we link to. When you follow a link to another site — including affiliate links — that site sets its own cookies under its own policy. An affiliate company may use a cookie on its own site to record that you arrived from us.

Controlling cookies

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block strictly necessary cookies, the contact form and voting won’t work.
